What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

There are many common reasons why patients may have discolored teeth:

  • Foods and Drinks: Some foods and beverages contain chromogens. Chromogens are pigments that attach to the enamel and stain teeth. Patients may notice staining from drinking coffee, tea, and wine or eating tomatoes and berries.
  • Tobacco: Smoking cigarettes, vaping, and using other tobacco products can yellow the tooth enamel. Nicotine is a substance found in tobacco that easily stains teeth and also causes halitosis or bad breath.
  • Dental Injuries: Any hits to the mouth or tooth injuries can lead to discoloration. Additionally, tooth chips or cracks expose the dentin beneath the tooth enamel. Dentin is the dark underlayer beneath the enamel. While we can cover these teeth with veneers or bonding treatment, we cannot whiten the natural dentin.

Our in-office teeth whitening treatment can deliver treatment in 45 to 60 minutes. To begin treatment, we apply Vitamin E oil to keep the lips moisturized throughout treatment. Then, we place a retractor and cotton gauze to keep the mouth open. The gauze also prevents saliva from affecting the active whitening ingredients. We also cover the top and bottom gums around each tooth to prevent gum sensitivity. Then, we place Zoom! bleaching gel, creating consistent layers for each tooth. To cure the teeth and ensure the active ingredients enter each tooth, we position a light lamp over the teeth for fifteen minutes. Finally, we remove the gel and repeat this process three more times. Each treatment takes fifteen minutes.

Alternatively, we can plan custom take-home Zoom! whitening treatment. The at-home whitening treatment uses trays and whitening gel for more gradual results. Our office will take dental impressions to create the custom take-home trays. We will also instruct you on how long to wear your trays each day.

If you have intrinsic stains, we may recommend dental bonding or porcelain veneers. Intrinsic stains are stains beneath the tooth’s surface. Dental injuries and excessive fluoride intake can create discoloration. Tooth bonding uses malleable materials to cover one or multiple teeth. Once we sculpt and color-match the material, we harden it with a curing light. Dental veneers are porcelain ceramic shells we bond to the front of the enamel.
